   My girlfriend and I plan to get married in Sabah in May 2009. We are both Hong Kong residents, with Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Passport.

   Please advise on the procedures and the preparatory paper work required.

   Hi Yiukee CHAN, congrates. I think you have to over to the marriage registration department in Hong Kong and ask them about it as you might need some documents for you be able to get married overseas. I’m sure they will have all the details. You have to get in touch with the Malaysia embassy or high commissioner for it and to fill in any required documents also. Basically this two places will give you all that you need for you to get married over here.

   If I’m not mistaken, you have to follow your IC address on where to register. Since he’s a foreigner, he will have some extra requirements that he needs to fulfill. Therefore it is best for you to go the the embassy(if you are not in Malaysia) or any nearest JPN to get all the details so that he can prepare all the documents needed. They will be able to guide you on what and where to go and documents to prepare.

   I’d like to check if the Buddhist Mahavihara temple in Brickfields, KL still accept marriage registration? Cos I heard they are trying to renew their license this year, not sure if successful or not. thanks!

    Hi Ivy, all you need to do is get your fiance to change his IC’s address to Selangor, easier to the same address as yours. Then proceed to JPN and they will let you know the procedures.

    Hi!

    My fiance is from Vietnam and I am from Malaysia. We have completed the documents from Vietnam Embassy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JPN. Both of us plan to register in Malaysia this month. And we were told we must go to the Shah Alam registrar.

    Would appreciate that if you could let us know the procedures to get registered with the Registrar of Marriage in Shah Alam.

    Do we need to go for pre-register like booking date? Pls advise.

    Ken, bring all your documents to JPN in Shah Alam, then they will tell you everything. This will be where you make appointment with them for the date.

    Adrian, yes, you can but you have to arrange with them when you take the needed document or submit all your documents and make the appointment date, they might refer you to the assistant registrar near your place, just tell them your plan and they will be happy to assist you.

    I am from Sabah and my husband-to-be is local (Selangor). I don’t know the procedure to get us registered. Kindly advise in detail. I have no idea why the procedure to get registered in Government dept is so troublesome as what i heard from a lot of people.

    Alice, it’s pretty troublesome indeed for East and West Malaysians to get married.

    All I can give u is brief details. Decide where you want to get your marriage register, in Sabah or Selangor. Then one of you have to change your IC address to the place where you intend to get your marriage registeed.

    For East Malaysian to change address to West Malaysia’s address is easy but it’s not easy for West Malaysian to change address to East Malaysia’s address (of I’m not mistaken).

    Once you have decided where you want to get married, go to the nearest JPN according to the IC address and then they will tell you what to do. Basically the procedure is take the form, check your status, prepare documents, submit, make appointment, wait to see if anyone oppose in 21 days, then on the date itself, bring all the needed documents and that’s it. You are more likely to make about 2-3 trips to JPN for the whole process.

    The JPN people will tell you everything you need.

    I hope you can help me to locate either Hokkien Association or Cantonese Association in Selangor. Cause it is too troublesome to get register in JPN.

    Alice, sorry I don’t have any details for it as I’m not even located in West Malaysia. By the way, even if you want to go to those associations to register, you will still have to go to JPN for the initial arrangement, take all the documents and check your status, from there you can get all the needed contact details from them, they should have it to assist you to get your marriage register at the association as the associations are only assistant registrars appointed by JPN to do the registration. Sorry to tell you that, you cannot escape JPN no matter what.

    So, head over to the nearest JPN to get all the forms and find out the associations that are appointed to do your wedding registration.

    hi, i am an india couple i would like to know how do i do a registation in a temple after my marriage. bc in the temple that im getting married there is no registar. im getting married in banting temple, selangor

    kohilah, if the temple does not have an assistant registrar to register for you, just do whatever ceremony you want but remember to go JPN after or before that to register your marriage. As for registering, just do as normal, go to JPN submit everything and register there. JPN doesn’t care how is your wedding ceremony or where you will be having it or had it. All they care is to have you sign the paper and be a legal couple. Find the nearest JPN and get your marriage register there.
